A Brief History Of Ian Brown
As lead singer of The Stone Roses, Brown helped nail down a bridge between alternative rock and club culture in the dying days of the 80s. Hot on the heels of The Smiths and the ill-fated Factory imprint, their debut album remains a vital timestamp of musical progression in Northern England and beyond.
Despite being a household name in the so-called Madchester era, Brown was actually born 20 miles outside of Manchester in the rugby league town of Warrington. It was at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys that he met Roses’ guitarist John Squire. The two became close friends after Brown helped out Squire during a fight with a school bully. I guess we can thank that prick for sparking off one of the greatest musical relationships in the modern era.
After releasing a second album with The Stone Roses, tensions began to mount in the band and Brown decided to go down the solo route. It turned out to be a pretty successful move. The newfound freedom seemed to loosen up his tongue and allowed him to find an extra gear in creative social commentary.
Of course, the decision to reunite for a Roses tour was music to the ears of fans everywhere, and brought the sounds of those two classic albums to a new generation. The huge public demand for those tickets only confirmed what we knew all along.
Ian Brown, people’s champ through and through.
