A Brief History of Diana Ross

As a founding member and lead singer of The Supremes, her rise to mainstream success under the Motown imprint laid the blueprint for each and every wave of black American soul music that followed.

Ross caught the ear of Motown boss Berry Gordy when she was just 15 years old. Due to her young age, she was told to come back to audition for the label after she graduated high school. Unfazed by this, Ross kept showing up to Hitsville U.S.A. week after week, offering to record handclaps and backing vocals for other artists on the roster.

By 1961, Gordy had signed her along with Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Barbara Martin – and The Supremes were born. Their first number one single, ‘Where Did Our Love Go’, was released in 1964 and paved the way for unprecedented string of hits. Nine more number ones followed in less than three years, making Ross and co. Motown’s best-selling vocal act of the mid-60s.

After the heyday Motown years, Ross went on to more sniff out more success on her own, starting with her debut solo album in 1970 which set the tone with one of her biggest tunes all told – ‘Ain’t No Mountain (High Enough)’.

Her inimitable style, pursuit of change and passion for hard graft is what elevates her above many of her contemporaries. If you’ve got a hat, there are few people more worthy of removing it for.

Ladies and gentlemen, Diana Ross.
