A Brief History of Arctic Monkeys
It’s actually pretty easy to forget the huge crater that their first album left on landing back in 2006. Following on from luminaries like The Strokes and The Libertines, the UK indie scene was left pining for another breakout album of epic proportions, and it got it in the form of Whatever People Say I Am…
Even before that, it’s hard to think of a similar case in recent years when a band’s demo collection caught as much attention, not just around Sheffield but the whole country. The hype was real, and the lads delivered a string of albums that more than lived up to it.
The inspiration for this illustration comes from the ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ days, namely a memorable appearance on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross. The whole band were dolled up in full circus garb, striped suits, big shoes, the lot. In our eyes, it’s still one of the defining performances from the golden days of 00s indie rock.
Anyway, before we get too teary-eyed, you have to applaud the band’s decision to push themselves and try out new things, even if it’s no longer your bag. Their style may have evolved from Fred Perry polos to big shirt collars and a plenty of lacquer, but there’s a certain something that keeps them up top as one of the biggest bands in the world.
Maybe because their range of stuff now extends far enough to say there’s a bit of something for everyone. Respect for that.
