A Brief History Of James Brown

Get up offa that thing for the hardest-working man show business has ever seen – the one, the only Mr. James Brown.

Now, where does somebody like James Brown possibly begin his musical journey? Jail, that’s where. Well, more specifically, a juvenile detention centre on account of being convicted of robbery at age 16. There, in true jailbird style, he formed a gospel quartet, one that included future bandmate Johnny Terry.

After securing an early release from juvie in the early 50s, Brown eventually hooked up with a group of young musicians who, within a few years, changed their name to the Famous Flames. With Brown at the helm, the band developed a reputation as an electrifying live act and put together an impressive run of hit singles – ‘Please, Please Please’ and ‘Think’ to name a few.

But as the 60s drew on, it was clear that the genius of Mr. Dynamite couldn’t be contained. He began to focus on other projects and began developing a sound that would go on to be labelled as funk. In fact, his 1967 single ‘Cold Sweat’ is said to be the groundbreaker.

By the turn of the decade, Brown had exhausted the relationship with his road band beyond repair; but this only led to the next wave of supporting musicians and associated acts: Maceo Parker, Lyn Collins and Bootsy Collins all included. He also began sporting the most famous of his self-styled nicknames – The Godfather of Soul. And who could argue?

The amazing thing about James Brown is that, no matter how deeply you’ve searched through his recordings, it’s impossible to know the total extent of the iceberg. As a singer, songwriter, record producer and general ringleader, he left a mark in every trade he turned his hand to.

And oh man, he could move.
