A Brief History Of Ian Curtis

One for all you Joy Division fans out there. Pay your respects to their legendary frontman with this framed print capturing Ian Curtis in full flail.

Born in Stretford, Manchester in 1956, Curtis grew up in nearby Macclesfield and spent his formative years writing poetry and fawning over the likes of Jim Morrison and David Bowie. He’d volunteer to visit old folks’ homes as part of the school’s social service program, only to raid the bathroom cabinet for any prescription drugs to share with his mates.

Between those boyish days and getting involved with the band, he quit his A-Levels, got a job in the civil service and tied the knot with childhood sweetheart Deborah Woodruff. Then a gig at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall in July ‘76 changed everything.

It was there watching The Sex Pistols unload their fury on about 40 people that Curtis bumped into his old school cronies Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Terry Mason – and they were forming a band. Curtis offered up his services as singer/songwriter and, thus, Joy Division was formed.

Well, not quite. Originally they went for the name Warsaw but that caused confusion with another similarly named group down in London. So, naturally they settled on Joy Division, the moniker given to sex-slave dens in Nazi concentration camps. Lovely.

Moving swiftly on, the band soon cemented an inimitable sound thanks to the likes of producer Martin Hannett and local TV icon Tony Wilson. They signed to Wilson’s Factory Records and got to work on debut album Unknown Pleasures. It was around that time Curtis became known for his awkward persona and trademark style of dance, reminiscent of the epileptic seizures he started experiencing towards the end of 1978.

Sadly, medical and mental health troubles got the best of him, and on 17th May 1980, Curtis hanged himself on the eve of Joy Division’s debut tour of North America. He was 23 years old.
