A Brief History Of Stevie Wonder

From child prodigy to a bona fide musical genius, we give thanks and praise to one of the best to ever kick it – Stevie Wonder.

The story of this man’s life is genuinely beyond compare. Blind since birth, Stevie quickly developed a knack for playing instruments as a nipper, also singing in his local choir – and a knack is putting it very lightly. By 11, he had already auditioned for Berry Gordy and signed for Motown.

Fast forward past the Detroit golden age and into the 70s, this is where Stevie set himself even further apart from his contemporaries. Bear in mind that in 1970 he’d only just grown out of his teenage years. The peak of his powers arguably came in the shape of four consecutive albums – from Talking Book to Songs In The Key of Life. But that’s still only scratching the surface.

Three days after the release of Innervisions, Stevie was injured in a serious car accident that left him in a coma for four days. Following the crash, he lost his sense of smell permanently and his sense of taste temporarily. That’s right folks, for a short while the man was effectively a walking set of ears.

After further massive commercial success in the 80s, which included the inconceivable feat of composing a song called ‘Happy Birthday’ that could even begin to rival its predecessor, Stevie’s legacy was beyond question by the time he hit 40 years old. That’s an incredibly rare feat for any artist in any craft.

Oh, before we forget, one little known fact about the great man is that he has one of the most incredible birth names going... Stevland Hardaway Judkins. Round of applause to Mr. and Mrs, Judkins for pulling that one out of the bag.
