A Brief History of Elvis Presley
Presley’s story is one of remarkable transformations. At first, he was just a skinny, churchgoing lad from Tupelo, Mississippi who began to take an interest in the guitar. When his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee at the turn of the 50s, he was teased as a mama’s boy, failed his high school music class and told his singing would never amount to much.
Then one day during his junior year, he ran a streak of rose oil through his hair. Something shifted in the way people received him and he soon caught the attention of local label Sun Records as a good ballad singer. A year of studio sessions passed before the Elvis sound was born – on a foolhardy version of Arthur Crudup’s ‘That’s All Right’.
With a tight band behind him, Presley began to popularise a strange hybrid between country and R&B, eventually termed rock ‘n roll. He got dealt a lot of racial hate for doing so, and was even accused of awakening the sexual passions of teenage youth. Heaven forbid.
Eventually, the riot calmed down and the sideburns became more agreeable. He appeared in countless high profile TV slots before beginning a two-year stint into the U.S. Army in 1958. After completing his service, he spent most of the next decade in a relentless film schedule, acting and recording soundtracks.
Then, the legendary ‘68 comeback special. Free from the shackles of commercial film contracts, this was arguably Presley’s finest hour. The King was more alive than ever, and we believe he still is today. Just press play.
